Committee calls for Government inquiry into blacklisting

The Chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable MP to ask that Government launch a full investigation into blacklisting on Crossrail after apparently hearing compelling evidence that the practice is current and ongoing.

The Committee had been investigating historic allegations of blacklisting in the construction industry, questions about compensating the people affected and holding the companies involved to account, but alleges that the practice is still continuing.

The call has been backed by the TUC. TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said:

“Over the years thousands of workers have suffered the injustice of being denied work simply for raising concerns about the safety of their colleagues.

“Blacklisting is a shameful practice that has no place in a modern economy. It causes misery for those on the blacklist and puts at risk many thousands of construction workers who feel unable to raise safety concerns, in one of the country's most dangerous industries, for fear of losing their livelihoods.”
