Bedroom Tax Cap to be Lifted

Powers are to be transferred to the Scottish Government that will allow it to lift a cap on the amount it's allowed to spend on mitigating the effects of the Bedroom Tax.

The new powers will allow £50 million to be spent on making Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs) in order to off-set the effects of the tax, which applies to social housing tenants on housing benefit. Approximately 72,000 households in Scotland are subject to the controversial spare room subsidy.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "I am delighted that in future anyone who has been affected by this unfair policy will receive the help they need and would encourage them to contact their Local Authority to apply for assistance through the DHP scheme."
